How Vibration Welding different from Ultrasonic Welding

It is always asked what is the difference between vibration welding and ultrasonic welding. The energy for both vibration welding and ultrasonic welding is resulted from oscillation in frequency, while there is essential difference between two welding methods as below:


1.The source of vibration / Oscillation are different:

A.Ultrasonic oscillation cased by the stretch deformation of the material of ultrasonic converter/booster/horn in regulate and high frequency under the control of power supplier which is normally called as ultrasonic generator. This kind material stretch deformation casing oscillation is cased by the piezoelectric ceramics of transducer under high voltage in ultrasonic frequency wove. Thus we called transducer as converter which converts electrical energy into mechanical oscillation energy;









B.Vibration welding means linear vibration, which is cased by a kind of repeat motion from one side to the other side in frequency. It is cased by the oscillation of high strength springs (we called vibration springs) under the alternate force in frequency from electric magnetic I and Magnetic E. The magnetic is forced with high voltage in the same frequency by its power supply which is called as amplifier.



2.The Direction of Vibration / Oscillation are different:
A.Ultrasonic oscillation is vertically repeating from center to terminals along the longy direction;

B.Vibration welding Oscillation is linearly repeat between two side in horizontal.


3.The melting casing welding is different:
A.During ultrasonic welding, the heating casing material melting is result from the internal oscillation friction existing in the construction of part material cased by ultrasonic energy;

B.During vibration welding, the heating casing material melting is result from the external friction between the contacting material surface of two parts.


4.The frequency of wave is different:
A.Ultrasonic welding wave frequency unit is in KHz, normally over than 15KHz;
B.Vibration welding wave frequency unit is Hz, normally is 80~260Hz (note: MP Sonic super-high frequency vibration technology can reach 365Hz);

Thus ultrasonic frequency is much higher than vibration frequency.


5.Amplitude of wave is different:
   Amplitude of wave means the wave length peak to peak;
A.Ultrasonic welding wave amplitude in unit of μm (normally is under 80μm );

B.Vibration welding wave amplitude in unit of mm (in the market, the working amplitude most of vibration welding technology is 0.8~3.8mm, while only MP Sonic super-high vibration technology can realize working amplitude as small as 0.2mm).


6.Application is different:

  Ultrasonic welding technology can be applied for ultrasonic welding, spot welding, stacking, punching/cutting, forming, etc, while presently linear vibration welding can be applied for friction welding.


7.Welding ability is different:
A.Ultrasonic welding process ability is can be applied for welding work-pieces in small measurement. And there is bigger limit to parts geometric design and material to be welded;
B.Vibration welding is advantages for its super-high welding ability. It can be applied for the most challenging geometric size and design, and almost all thermoplastic material is weldable by vibration welding technology. Vibration welding can achieve the highest welding strength and reach air-tightness.
